What should I do if I am bitten by a dog?
Posted on Jan 15, 2013 10:00am PST
A person who is bitten by a dog or other animal may have a legal right to recover damages from the owner of the animal. The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge as such viciousness. Sometimes this is called strict liability; you do not need to prove negligence on the part of the owner of the dog.
In the event of a bite, you may be able to recover your medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering damages.
Although there are some exceptions to the above rule, you should consider consulting an attorney to determine if you have a claim against the owner or other responsible person.
